In most written music there are notes which have specific pitches. These notes are given the names A B C D E F and G. This is called the musical alphabet. However, most drum and percussion notes do not have specific pitches, so the most important thing is the time value of each note. The time value of a note means how many beats or counts it lasts for.
These five lines are called the staff or stave.
This symbol is called a percussion clef.
There is a percussion clef at the beginning of every line of drum music.
This is a musical note called a quarter note. It lasts for one beat or count.
Music notes are written in the spaces and on the lines of the staff.
