Eighth Notes
An Eighth Note (or Quaver) 5 is worth half a beat in * time. Two eighth notes, which are usually joined by a line across the top of the two notes. 6 have the same value as a quarter note. Eighth notes are counted as such:
Ex. 11 uses a combination of quarter notes and eighth notes, played on the snare drum.
Now you have learned some basic eighth note exercises you can move onto rock beats using a basic eighth note cymbal pattern to each bar. Use either the ride cymbal or the hi-hats (closed), playing with the right hand. The cymbal pattern will be played 1+2+3+4: the bass drum will be played on the 1,2,3,4 and the snare drum will be played on the 2 and 4 counts.
Play this beat in exactly the same manner as Ex. 15 except the bass drum is played only on the 1 and 3, resting on the 2 and 4.
