The SINGLE STROKE ROLL, together with the double stroke roll used in various ways are probably the two most used rudiments in rock drumming. They can be used in fills, introductions and endings of songs.
Practice starting the exercise with both your left and right hand. Unlike the double stroke roll the single stroke roll is played using single wrist movements for each tap and does not bounce in the same manner as the double stroke roll.
Start very slowly and gradually increase your speed making sure it is played smoothly, cleanly and evenly spaced.
This rudiment is also common in rock drumming and consists of the main note with a "Grace Note" played before it. Grace notes are indicated by a smaller note crossed with a diagonal line. They have no real time value.
Practice the flam by bringing both hands down together, but let the right hand strike the drum first, then immediately play the main note with your left hand. Repeat the procedure in reverse (e.g., let the left hand play the grace note and the right hand play the main note).
The slur line beneath each flam indicates that the notes should be played as smoothly as possible.
