12 Bar Blues can also use minor chords. The following example is a 12 bar Blues in the key of A minor. It uses a two bar riff for the two bar A minor sections and a variation of this riff in the other sections. When a bar repeat sign is placed on the bar line it indicates that the bar before the sign and the bar after the sign are both repeated. Use alternate picking throughout this example. The number two () above the 4th bar line indicates that both bars 3 and 4 are to be repeats of the previous two bars.
To increase speed in your playing of these riffs, make sure that your left hand is correctly positioned. Each finger should "line up" with the string being played, and should hover a small distance above it until used. Each finger should also be in line with the four frets being used in the riff. Check your hand position with the following photographs:
This hand position will be difficult at first, but it is essential if you are to eventually work up to a fast, smooth sound.
