Tuning the Snare - Summary

The snare drum is considered to be the heart of the drum kit. To produce a really good sound from your drum kit, you must make sure that you have a great sounding snare.

Once you have chosen the right heads from Section 2, to suit the style of music you will be playing, carefully follow the step by step tuning method in Section 3, to achieve the sound that you want.

Although most of the sound quality is determined by correct head selection, tuning and dampening, it is advisable to use a professional or semi-professional snare drum to be really sure of a great sound.

Any problems with the toms or the bass drum, resulting from poor quality can usually be overcome, to a reasonable degree, through correct tuning and dampening. The snare drum however, needs to be of a good quality to deliver the brightness and attack usually required.
