The key of F contains 1 flat (Bb). All B notes are played as Bb. The key signature for F major is:
Using scale tone chord theory based upon the F major scale (see Appendix 2), the most common chords in the key of F major are:
You have learned all of these chord shapes except Bb and Gm, which are introduced next. Even though there are seven scale tone chords, the seventh scale tone (diminished chord) is relatively uncommon. See the chord chart for this diminished chord shape.
The Gm chord is constructed from the G major scale (see Appendix 2). Using the minor chord formula on the G major scale, it can be seen that the Gm chord contains the notes G, Bb and D. When the third note of the G major scale (B) is flattened it becomes a Bb note. Play the three notes of the Gm chord individually, and then together, with both your left and right hands in various positions on the keyboard.
