INTRODUCTION

Lesson 2/53 | Study Time: 5 Min
INTRODUCTION

This book takes a unique approach to learning blues lead guitar. Progressive Blues Lead Guitar Technique takes the blues scale and uses it immediately to make music.

The scale is taken through all possible fingerings in the one key, making it possible to play fluently over the entire range of the guitar. The entire first section is in the key of E, The most popular key for blues players. Other keys are introduced later in the book, but only after the fretboard has been mastered.

The central approach of the book is the development of Musical technique. Many of the basic lead guitar techniques such as Hammer-Ons, Pull-Offs, Bends and Slides, have already been covered in the book Progressive Blues Lead Guitar Method, which is recommended as a primer to this book. Although new scales, arpeggios and techniques are introduced, the emphasis here is on how to really get the most out of the notes you play.

In Blues playing what you do with the notes and where you put them is much more important than how many notes you play. It is largely the phrasing and timing, along with control of drama and storytelling that distinguishes the great Blues players from the rest. This book uses the concept of set rhythms to help you gain control of your timing and phrasing as well as to understand the rhythms you are playing.

Other important topics covered are developing a theme, techniques for sustaining notes and adding excitement such as the trill and tremolo and getting and authentic Blues sound in your playing through combining major and minor sounds in the same lick.

Anyone who successfully completes this book will be well on the way to becoming an excellent Blues lead guitarist.
