Latin rhythms are very popular and their influence is found in almost every currant contemporary music style from rock, blues, pop, jazz etc. Each rhythm feel has its unique flavour and origin which is often reflected in the name. Though the chords can be quite colorful the note choices of the bass line are often rather simple, e.g., root and fifth are the most common one.
The next example features a Bossa Nova which is a Brazilian rhythm.
Example 157 features a Rumba rhythm with the accents on beat 1, 2 + and 4.
Example 158 features a Calypso feel which has the same rhythm accents as the Rhumba. A calypso bass line is often based upon the notes of a triad, e.g., root, third and fifth as shown in the next example.
Example 159 uses another syncopated popular latin groove with the accents on the 2 + and 4.
