The Eighth Note Rest

The eighth note rest j, indicates a half beat of silence. In the following exercises, eighth note rests occur on the second and fourth beats. The eighth note rest can be achieved by either releasing pressure on a fretted note (with your left hand), or by deadening the string with your right hand (for either fretted or open notes).

Observe the use of the eighth note rest in bars 5, 6 and 8.
