The following exercise features the 3 principle chords in the key of C, playing four strums per bar as indicated by the notes and the down strum ( a ) symbol:
Notes are used on the first beat of every bar to indicate which chord is to be strummed.
*This is a shorthand method of writing C major. It applies to all major chords.
Be sure to maintain a slow, steady beat, particularly between the chord changes, which will be difficult at first. You should also practice other combinations of these three chords.
For further chord exercises see Progressive Rhythm Guitar .
Play this Blues slowly at first, carefully observing the timing, flats and naturals; gradually increase the speed. Chord names have been placed above each chord group, however be sure to read the notes carefully in order to play the correct number of strings (e.g., bar 1 features a 4-string C chord, while bar 2 features a 3-string C.
In bars 2, 4 and 6 of Part II the symbol C indicates an exact repeat of the previous bar. Part II features bass note picking style of accompaniment, introduced in the previous lesson.
