In the key of D minor the 3 principle chords are Dm (Im), Gm (IVm) and A7 (V7). Two forms for the Gm and A7 have been given. Note that the half bar used in the second form of the Gm chord is played using the third finger.

In the Gm (form 2) chord, the fifth string’s sound is deadened by letting the second finger lightly touch it. The second finger should not press down on the fifth string, but should stop it from sounding. On the fretboard diagram a deadened string is indicated by a cross (:) placed above it.
