Chords

Chords

A chord is a group of three or more different notes played together. In music notation, chords are indicated by placing notes on top of each other, as such:

Exercise 16 features notes played in melody form (e.g., bars 1 and 3), followed by the same notes played as a chord. The fretted notes in bars 1, 3, 5 and 7 should be held down until the chord is played, as indicated by :

In bar 4 the C and F notes are both played by the first finger. You can see from Photo 1 that the first finger lays flat in order to press down both strings. This may be quite difficult at first, but it is very important for you to persevere and master this "barring" technique.

Be sure to play only three strings in this chord exercise and aim for a smooth change between the chords.
