Fifth Chords

Lesson 2/52 | Study Time: 5 Min
Fifth Chords

Fifth Chords

Fifth chords (also known as "Rock chords" or "Power chords") consist of only two notes. Technically fifth chords are not actually chords because a chord requires three or more notes, but as they are used frequently in modem music it is becoming more and more acceptable to refer to these shapes as chords. The three popular fifth chords in the open position are the A5. D5 and E5. Remember only two strings are played with each chord.

Example 36 is counted 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and. Only down-Strums are used.

Fifty Fifty features the A5. D5 and E5 chords. The rhythm in Example 36 is used throughout and as only two strings are played, each strum is represented by a small arrow.
