Shuffle Rhythm

Shuffle Rhythm

The shuffle rhythm or "boogie" is another popular rhythm used in Rock. Two types of chords are used to play the shuffle rhythm. the two string fifth chord learnt in Lesson 18 and a two string form of the sixth chord. The two string forms of the sixth chords are shown below. Each chord is played with the third finger but the first finger should remain positioned on the fifth chord as indicated by an open circle.

A6

D6

E6

Example 39 uses the A5 and A6 chords shown above. To achieve the correct sound for the shuffle rhythm. the first strum of each chord should have a slightly longer time value than the second strum creating the rhythm 1…ah, 2…ah, 3…ah, 4…ah. Listen to the recording to help get the right feel for this rhythm.

Example 40 is a popular variation of the shuffle rhythm. The same chords are used but are allocated to different strums within the rhythm.

Apply the shuffle rhythm variation from Example 40 to the following chord progression.
