Right Hand Damping

Rest butt of hand on strings

A popular effect to use with the fifth chord is right hand damping. This is achieved by lightly resting the butt of the right hand on the strings near the bridge of the guitar while strumming, producing a slightly muted sound to the chord. Do not press too heavily on the strings as the chord will be completely muted creating a "dead" sound instead.

The symbol "D" written above the strumming arrow will indicate when a right hand damp is used. Listen carefully to the recording to hear the desired sound needed for Example 37. An E5 is used.

Apply the right hand damp to the following progression.
