Staccato

In Funk guitar playing, many notes and chords are cut off as soon as they are played. This makes the rhythms very crisp and clear. The technique of cutting notes shorter than their written value is called staccato.

This is usually achieved by lifting the left hand off the fretboard as soon as the note is played. Staccato is indicated by a dot placed directly above or below the intended note.

Here is a lick making use of staccato. The lick is played twice, first without and then with staccato. Notice how the use of staccato changes the expression of the notes.
