Rests and Ties

Whatever style of music you are playing, the notes you don’t play are as important as the ones you do play. An essential element in Funk is the use of space between the notes or chords. The use of rests is the most common way of creating space between notes or chords.

To refresh your memory on the ways in which rests are written and their various time values, go back and look at the note values chart in Lesson 11 . The following examples introduce rests of various values. The first one uses the half rest which has a value of two beats of silence.

This one uses the quarter rest which has a value of one beat of silence.

This one features the eighth rest which has a value of half a beat of silence.

This example makes use of both quarter and eighth rests. If you have trouble keeping steady time when using rests, take each example slowly and make sure you count and tap your foot.
