Apart from the sound of the chords, the most essential element in Funk is the timing and the rhythms used. It is a good idea to learn how to read rhythms even if you don’t read music. Everybody uses the same notes, but it is the control of rhythm and phrasing which to a large extent separates the great players from the average. So you can see, it’s a very important topic.
