Continuing on with the study of sixteenth notes, here is the Blues scale with the rhythm from example 88.
These next few examples move around within the Blues scale to create licks. A lick is a short phrase which can be played as a response to a vocal line or another instrument, or can be linked together with other licks to form a solo. Each of the following licks makes use of the rhythms you have learned, along with groups of four 16th notes, and eighth notes. Experiment with the rhythms to create some licks of your own.
This four bar riff is a bit more challenging. A riff is a repeated phrase which may be altered to fit chord changes or it may repeat exactly. Riffs are very common in Funk.
