Here are some useful three note open voicings, and four note voicings of Augmented chords. No names or root notes are shown because any of the notes in each shape can be the root note and therefore the name of the chord.
Each time a shape is moved, it will have at least three possible new names. Learn to name each shape from all of its notes. The following exercises demonstrate some typical uses of augmented chords.
There are two types of diminished chords which are often interchangeable. The ones shown here contain three notes (triads). The other type is the diminished 7th chord. It contains four notes and is demonstrated in the next section.
The following shapes show diminished triads in various inversions built on twelve different root notes. The bottom line of chords demonstrate some open voicings built on the notes D, A, and E. These can be transposed to all the other keys.
