Power Chords

Lesson 2/57 | Study Time: 5 Min
Course: Metal Guitar
Power Chords

Power Chords

Power chords (also known as "rock chords" or "fifth chords") consist of only two notes. Technically power chords are not actually chords because a chord requires three or more notes, but as they are used frequently in modern music it is becoming more and more acceptable to refer to these shapes as chords. The three popular power chords in the open position are the A5, D5 and E5. Remember only two strings are played with each chord.

A5

D5

E5

Example 1 is counted "1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and". Only down-strums are used. As only two strings are strummed for these chords, only a short stroke of the right hand is needed.

The following example applies the power chords A5, D5, and E5.
