A popular effect to use with the power chord is right hand muting. This is achieved by lightly resting the butt of the right hand on the strings near the bridge of the guitar while strumming, producing a slightly muted sound to the chord. Do not press too heavily on the strings as the chord will be completely muted, creating a "dead" sound instead.
The symbol X written below the tab number will indicate when a right hand mute is used.
The right hand mute can also be used with single note riffs and accents.
The following progression combines the right hand mute with a normal power chord strum.
