Triplet Rhythms

Lesson 3/57 | Study Time: 5 Min
Course: Metal Guitar
Triplet Rhythms

Triplet Rhythms

This type of rhythm is often referred to as an eighth note triplet rhythm. In music notation triplets are indicated by three notes grouped together by a bracket or curved line and the number 3 written above or below the group.

It is essential that the first strum of each group is accented, i.e., played louder. In example 42 an E5 chord is strummed for one bar using triplets, a total of twelve strums per bar.

The triplet rhythm can be applied to a basic Metal progression.

The following example uses a variation of a triplet rhythm. The eighth note triplets are played only on the 2nd and 4th beats of each bar.
