The most common way of playing the electric guitar is with a pick (or plectrum). Picks come in various sizes and thicknesses. Generally the thinner ones work better for rhythm playing and the thicker ones are better for lead playing. You may need to experiment with several picks before deciding which one suits you best. The traditional picking grip is to hold the pick between the thumb and the last joint of the index finger.
There are two basic right hand positions when using a pick. The first is to keep the fingers of the right hand closed, and the second to open the hand across the face of the guitar. Try both positions and decide which one you are most comfortable with.
To help keep the right hand steady when picking, try bracing the fourth finger on the face of the guitar as shown in the photo. Note that while this position is helpful in picking situations it is not used when strumming.
