One of the most popular sounds in electric guitar playing is distortion. This is achieved by overdriving an amp (turning the pre-amp volume up and the master volume down) or by using a distortion pedal.
Pedals have a variety of controls, but usually include drive or distortion (to control the amount of distortion), tone (amount of treble or bass frequencies) and level or output (overall volume level). These are called parameters. They enable you to control and shape the sound to your personal taste. There are many different pedals available and it is best to try out several before buying one.
To achieve distortion sounds with an amp, turn your master volume down and your pre-amp volume up.
Here is another example using the notes E, F and G on the first string. It has been recorded using an overdrive sound. Set your amp or use a pedal to get an overdrive sound you like and then try playing along with the recording.
