You already know the E form of the harmonic minor scale. Shown below are the other four forms.
D Form(Pattern 2)
C Form(Pattern 3)
A Form(Pattern 4)
G Form(Pattern 5)
Once you are comfortable with the fingerings for these forms, try making up some licks from them. Here’s one derived from the C form in C minor. This one has a Classical flavor to it. Many metal players (e.g. Yngwie Malmsteen and both guitarists from Metallica) are influenced by Classical composers, particularly Bach and Paginini.
Here is a solo which makes use of all the scales and techniques you have learnt up to this point. Take it slowly at first and be sure to get all the techniques such as vibrato, bends, slides, slurring and pick tremolo. Listen to the CD many times until you know the sound of the solo, as this will make it easier to learn. When you can play the whole solo, work on it with your metronome until you can play it at a reasonable tempo and then try playing it along with the CD.
