By applying the formulas for seventh chords to the C major scale, the following series of chords is created. These are called scale tone seventh chords.
The following example contains all seven scale tone 7ths in C major. The progression is I IV VII III VI II V I. The choice of chord shapes is up to you, as different voicings suit different musical situations. It is usually best to use voicings which are close together on the fretboard. This makes them easy to play and results in a smoother sound than moving up and down one string to find the root notes of the chords.
