In many Jazz standards, the first chord of the progression is not chord I of the key. It is possible to start a tune with any scale tone chord, but the most common variation is to start with chord M and progress to chord V. This part is based on the chord progression to the Jazz standard Autumn Leaves. It alternates between the relative keys of G major and E minor. Using the scale tone 7th chords chart on the facing page, work through this progression and analyze the scale tone chords.
This example uses both rests on the beat and ties on the beat to create syncopation. Notice the use of the first finger across the 3rd and 4th strings at the 2nd fret.
