Another useful scale for soloing over dominant chords is the 5th mode of the harmonic minor (sometimes called the Spanish Phrygian scale). Its degrees are shown below.
Once again, a different set of arpeggios can be created from the chord tones, this time by the b9 and b13 degrees. This gives a diminished sound to lines derived from the scale.
The Spanish Phrygian scale is most commonly used either over dominant chords which are approaching a minor chord (V to I) or over altered dominant chords. Here is a line created from this scale. Once again, learn it and then transpose it to other keys. In this case the lines are all in eighth notes, but it important to experiment with a variety of rhythms and expressions. By doing this you will create lines which are distinctively your own# regardless of the chord or scale you are using. The more you practice, the easier it gets.
