The above piece can serve to introduce the student to the important technique of using a rest stroke, most commonly on the highest or melody note#, to accentuate the melody and help to separate it from the free stroke accompaniment. Practice this piece (and subsequent pieces) using first free stroke and then rest stroke on the melody notes, without changing right hand position. In the above piece, rest strokes can be applied to all notes with the stems pointing upwards on line one.
