As can be seen above, the first finger (1) is used to play the F note on the first fret, first string (!), and this constitutes the first position which applies whenever 1 is used on the first fret of any string.
As described on page 18, place your fingers on their tips, immediately behind the frets and press hard to avoid buzzing or deadened notes. Notice how the tip segments stand almost perpendicular to the string for strength and to avoid touching adjacent strings. Make sure to alternate, first using im, then ma, then ia, remembering to flex tip joints. Rest the thumb ( p ) on a lower bass string (i.e, ^) to keep the right hand steady.
The above and following examples use quarter notes (or crotchets) 3, worth one count each and introduce * time, where there are four quarter note beats per bar.
Note: Exercises, studies and pieces to follow in the method have been recorded in an "academic" rather than a freer musical style for purposes of demonstration.
Note: Exercises, studies and pieces to follow do not indicate tempo (speed) until page 105, and should be practiced at a comfortable tempo by each individual student.
