Having learned the notes on !@# and $, it is now possible to combine free stroke fingers with free stroke thumb in the following pieces.
They are essentially single line pieces, but the use of free stroke and the open $ provide a full harmonic sound.
The next pieces introduce the idea of voices or parts. The upper voice note stems point upwards and the lower voice note stems point downwards. This is standard practice in order to differentiate between more than one part and create the sound called polyphony or many voices - in these examples, two voices. Note that the tie gives a truer indication of time value than the above example, however both types of writing are common in guitar music. The quarter note rest (h), bar 1, only applies to the lower voice.
