Notice how the first finger rests against the fingerboard in the following photos (B and D). This is standard procedure when playing on $, %, and ^ as it allows the left hand to remain close to the fingerboard and the fingers to play with a similar action to that on ! @ and #. The first finger (and the whole left hand), should move progressively closer to the fingerboard from ! to @ to #until it rests against it when playing on @ (see photos). Note how the hand angles away for the fourth finger as explained on pg. 18.
